The Glückslöser — "luck loosener" — was a denomination peculiar to the Harz mining region, struck from Ausbeute silver: ore yields paid directly to the mine-owning prince as his share of production rather than purchased on the open market. Frederick Ulrich's reign over Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel coincided with the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, and the duchy's silver output from the Rammelsberg and surrounding mines took on strategic significance well beyond ceremonial coinage.
1622 also falls within the Kipper und Wipper period, when currency debasement across the German states reached its apex. That this piece was struck in full-weight Ausbeute silver makes it a pointed anomaly for its moment.
