Beschrijving voorzijde Central field bears two large Chữ Hán (Han Chinese) characters arranged vertically reading 明命 (Minh Mạng), the reign title of Emperor Minh Mạng. The characters are rendered in bold relief with clean strokes. Surrounding the central inscription is a border of evenly spaced raised beads, outside of which runs a reeded or rope-milled rim. The overall design is austere and calligraphic in character, typical of Nguyễn dynasty gold coinage.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse displays a finely detailed stylized dragon in profile, its sinuous body coiling across the field in the Vietnamese imperial manner. To the left of the dragon appears a square-form seal character in relief, likely denoting the denomination or mint authority. The dragon's head faces upward with an open maw and prominent scales, rendered in the flowing, dynamic style characteristic of Nguyễn court art. The border repeats the beaded inner ring and reeded outer rim seen on the obverse.

Aanvullende informatie

Minh Mạng reigned longer than any other Nguyễn emperor and oversaw a dramatic centralization of Vietnamese administration, including direct imperial control over the treasury and minting apparatus. The Board of Revenue struck these gold cash pieces not for everyday commerce but as presentation and ceremonial objects — salary payments to high officials, gifts within the court hierarchy, and occasionally rewards for military service. Ordinary circulation was handled entirely in copper.

The 1½ tiền denomination is unusual enough that surviving examples almost invariably show minimal wear.
