| Reverse description | The entire reverse field is occupied by a 21-line Latin commemorative inscription recounting the life and death of Duke John Frederick, set within a beaded inner border. The text records his birth at Hertzberg in 1625, his assumption of the duchies of Calenberg, Grubenhagen, and Göttingen in 1665, his celebrated qualities as a wise, magnanimous, and valiant prince who maintained Saxon peace while all European kings warred, and his death at Augsburg (Augusta Vindelicorum) on 18 December 1679 while on his way to Italy. The inscription concludes with the date ANNIM·DC·LXXIX. |
