| Obverse description | Half-length armored effigy of Duke Julius facing slightly left, holding a battle axe over his right shoulder. Below the figure, a five-line inscription appears in the field. To the right, three crested helmets surmount a sixfold quartered coat of arms. The obverse legend and date 1587 encircle the composition, recording the duke's titles in abbreviated Latin. |

| Reverse description | A horse springing to the left occupies the central field. To the right stands a wild man (Wilder Mann) grasping a tree trunk or club in his right hand, while in his left he holds a skull, an hourglass, and a pair of spectacles — the spectacles (Brille) being the emblematic device that gives this coin its popular name 'Brillentaler.' The reverse legend encircles the design with a devotional Latin inscription, followed by the mintmaster's and other official initials in abbreviated form. |
