Reverse description Elaborate quartered heraldic achievement within a beaded inner circle on the square klippe flan, featuring the combined arms of the County of Moers and associated lordships supported by two rampant lions as shield-bearers. Above the shield, a crowned helm is surmounted by a crest of crossed staves or scepters flanked by additional heraldic ornaments and mantling. The date 83 (for 1583) appears in the upper field divided by the crest. The surrounding legend reads: DEO ET PRINCIPI SER FID, meaning 'Faithful service to God and the Prince.'

Additional information

Adolph of Neuenahr-Moers inherited the County of Moers in 1575 and was one of the more volatile Reformed Protestant lords of the lower Rhine — his involvement in the conflicts surrounding the Cologne War of 1583 directly shaped the political atmosphere in which this heavy double thaler was struck. That same year, the attempted conversion of the Electorate of Cologne to Protestantism by Gebhard Truchsess von Waldburg triggered a war that drew in Spanish Habsburg forces and destabilized the entire region, Moers included.

The county's own mint output from this period is sparse, making 1583 strikes particularly scarce in any condition.
