Einbeck's municipal coinage authority in the sixteenth century derived from imperial privileges jealously defended against encroachment by the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, whose Welfen rulers repeatedly attempted to absorb the city's minting rights. The 1½ Thaler denomination — essentially a Reichsthaler and a half struck as a single piece — was never a workhorse of trade. These multiples were produced in limited runs, often for presentation purposes or to settle large accounts where fractional handling was inconvenient.

The Davenport reference places this among a tightly clustered group of Einbeck multiples from the 1570s, a decade when the city was asserting its commercial identity through conspicuous silver coinage despite shrinking political independence.
