Ahmad Shah I founded Ahmedabad in 1411, the same year he began his reign, making this issue contemporary with the city's establishment as the new sultanate capital — a deliberate political act of distancing from the older Anhilwara administration. His thirty-one year rule was among the longest of the Gujarat sultans, and copper fractions from the period circulated heavily in a regional economy built around textile trade with the Persian Gulf and East Africa.
