| Obverse description | The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field, surmounted by a royal crown rendered in the crude but bold style characteristic of mid-17th century hammered coinage. The shield displays the traditional quartered arms of Portugal with the escutcheons of the quinas. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading IOANNES IIII D G REX PORTVGAL, identifying the issuer as King João IV by the grace of God. The strike is typical of the period, with some weakness and irregularity at the flan edges. |
