Lithuania's 1½ euro denomination is a genuine circulating oddity — introduced in 2015 specifically to revive a pre-war Baltic monetary tradition and to give the country a coin distinct from the broader eurozone. Joninės, the midsummer festival tied to the June solstice, is among the oldest continuously observed celebrations in Lithuanian folk culture, with roots predating Christianization; the Church eventually absorbed it under the feast of St. John, hence the dual name Rasos/Joninės.
The 1½ euro face value corresponds to the old Lithuanian pusantro lito unit, a deliberate nod to interwar coinage practice.
