Frankfurt issued pattern strikes in silver alongside the gold originals for the 1764 coronation of Joseph II as Holy Roman Emperor — the last imperial coronation held in Frankfurt before the dissolution of the Reich in 1806. These silver patterns were not struck for circulation but as presentation or trial pieces, likely distributed among mint officials and dignitaries involved in the ceremony itself. The city's mint had a long-standing tradition of producing such parallel strikes in base or alternative metals to document die states before committing to full gold production.
Joseph II's coronation was unusually rushed, conducted while his father Francis I lay dying in Innsbruck.
