Kaunos, a Carian city on the Dalyan river, maintained a stubborn political independence that ping-ponged between Rhodian control and autonomy across the second century BC. This small bronze issue almost certainly belongs to one of the periods of Rhodian dominance — Rhodes absorbed Kaunos formally around 189 BC following Rome's settlement after Magnesia, and the city's civic coinage reflects the compromised sovereignty of a port town perpetually useful to larger powers.
