United Bank of India's specimen gift cheques were promotional instruments, not negotiable documents — printed to the format of a cheque but issued as ceremonial gifts, typically for weddings, religious occasions, or other auspicious events where cash gifts in round figures carried social significance. The 101-rupee denomination is deliberate: in Indian gift-giving custom, the extra single rupee above a round hundred signals goodwill and is considered auspicious, a convention observed across Hindu, Sikh, and Jain traditions alike.
