During the hyperinflation emergency of 1923, German chambers of commerce and local authorities issued Notgeld in wildly varied denominations to plug gaps in the money supply, but half-pfennig fractions in gold-indexed values are uncommon. The Goldpfennig designation signals this note was issued after the stabilization measures of late 1923 began taking hold, with issuers anchoring face values to gold rather than the collapsing paper Reichsmark.
The Handelskammer für den Amtsbezirk Pforzheim served a district built almost entirely on jewelry and watch manufacturing — a trade sector with particular sensitivity to metal valuations, which may explain the unusual precision of the denomination.
