This piece belongs to the Royal Mint's revival of the Gothic Crown design, originally created for Queen Victoria in 1847 by William Wyon — widely regarded as one of the finest British coin designs of the nineteenth century. The 2021 iteration sits at the extreme end of the Mint's large-format proof program, with a diameter placing it among the largest gold coins ever struck under British authority.
At just over ten kilograms of .9999 fine gold, production requires individual handling at every stage; standard coining presses cannot accommodate blanks of this specification.
