Equatorial Guinea's piedfort issues of 1979–1980 were produced almost entirely for the collector market, with the "Kings of Spain Royal Visit" series commemorating Juan Carlos I's state visit to Malabo — a diplomatic gesture carrying real political weight given Spain's ambiguous role in the country's post-independence period. Obiang Nguema had seized power from Francisco Macías Nguema just months earlier, in August 1979, and the Spanish visit lent a degree of international legitimacy to a regime that badly needed it.
At 64 grams in .917 gold, this piedfort strikes roughly twice the planchet thickness of a standard issue. Mintages for this series were extremely small, with production handled by overseas mints under contract rather than any domestic facility.
