Struck to commemorate Juan Carlos I's 1979 state visit to Equatorial Guinea — one of the few Spanish-speaking nations in sub-Saharan Africa and a former Spanish colony that gained independence in 1968. The visit carried obvious diplomatic weight as Spain sought to maintain influence in the region under its newly democratic government. This aluminium pattern was never approved for circulation, leaving production confined to a small number of presentation pieces.
