Issued during the pontificate of John Paul II — the Polish-born pope whose 1979 return visit to his homeland drew crowds estimated at ten million and visibly accelerated the Solidarity movement — this coin occupied a peculiar position: state-sanctioned gold bearing the likeness of a man the communist government considered a direct political threat. The National Bank of Poland produced several papal issues through the 1980s, a calculated hard-currency play that required the regime to mint propaganda for its own opposition.
