Poland's postwar monetary reconstruction was chaotic. The communist-backed Provisional Government inherited a currency system wrecked by Nazi occupation scrip, clandestine Home Army financing, and multiple competing note issues — the 1946 series was an attempt to impose institutional normalcy on that wreckage. This 1000-złoty denomination was among the highest-value notes in the series, a necessary concession to severe inflation that had already eroded the practical usefulness of smaller denominations.

Polak's engraving work on this series is technically accomplished, and Borowski's designs were among the more considered efforts to establish a visual identity distinct from both the occupation period and the prewar republic. Three signature combinations appear across the series; the Drożniak-Hanemann-Póstówka combination is the most commonly encountered on this pick number.
