| 正面描述 | A detailed high-relief depiction of the Badaling section of the Great Wall of China occupies the central field, rendered with exceptional engraving detail showing the main watchtower gate, flanking wall sections, auxiliary pavilions, and decorative trees in the foreground. The serpentine course of the Wall recedes into the background on both sides of the central gatehouse. A Chinese inscription reading 长城八达岭景 (Badaling Great Wall Scenery) appears in the lower field beneath the architectural composition. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs in Chinese characters along the upper periphery, with the date 1998 prominently placed at the bottom exergue. |

This is one of the largest gold coins issued under China's lunar series program, which began in 1981 and established the format still running today. The 1998 Tiger issue had a mintage of just 88 pieces — the number chosen deliberately, as eight carries strong auspicious associations in Chinese culture. At roughly 12 troy ounces of fine gold, these were never intended for circulation; they were sold directly to collectors and institutions at issue.
The 88-piece mintage makes auction appearances genuinely rare events.
