Reverse description A naturalistic snake rendered in fine relief winds sinuously across the lower-centre of the field, its head raised and tongue extended, representing the zodiac sign of the Year of the Snake. Above the snake, stylised grass or reeds are depicted in an abstract pattern. To the upper left, a Chinese seal-script inscription identifies the subject. Encircling the central design is a dotted beaded border interspersed with twelve small figural representations of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals in low relief. The denomination 1000元 is inscribed along the lower rim in bold numerals flanked by decorative cloud scroll ornaments, with an engraver's seal mark below the central design.
