The American Western Banknote Company was a smaller competitor to the dominant ABNC and BWC houses, and its contract work for the Chinese Nationalist government during the war years reflects the scramble for printing capacity as demand for high-denomination notes accelerated with wartime inflation. By 1945, the Central Bank of China's currency was deteriorating rapidly in purchasing power — the 1000 Yuan, a significant sum just years earlier, was losing practical value almost as quickly as notes could be printed and shipped across the Pacific.

P#294 is one of several issues from this period where distinguishing between printer variants requires close attention to marginal inscriptions.
