The Bank of Shansi, Chahar & Hopei — commonly abbreviated as the Jinchabei Bank in Chinese sources — was a Communist-controlled regional bank established to serve the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region, one of the major anti-Japanese base areas behind enemy lines. By 1946, with Japan defeated and the civil war against the Nationalists escalating, the bank was issuing high-denomination notes partly to manage the inflationary pressure that had been building since the wartime economy began unwinding.
High-denomination Border Region notes from this period were frequently demonetized, withdrawn, or simply destroyed as Communist financial administration consolidated in the late 1940s, which accounts for the scarcity of surviving examples today.
