Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Okinawa's reversion to Japanese administration on May 15, 1972, this coin commemorates the conclusion of a U.S. occupation that began with the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and persisted long after the 1952 San Francisco Peace Treaty restored sovereignty to mainland Japan. Okinawa was deliberately excluded from that settlement, retained by Washington as a strategic Pacific base during the Cold War under the continued authority of the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands.
Negotiations for reversion stretched through the late 1960s, with Prime Minister Sato securing agreement from Nixon in 1969 on the condition that American military bases remain. The handover happened, but the bases never left.
