Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of Japan's modern postal system, which dates to April 20, 1871, when the first domestic mail routes connected Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka under the direction of Maejima Hisoka. Maejima is widely credited with standardizing postal rates and introducing the postal stamp to Japan after studying British postal reform — he reportedly convinced the Meiji government of the system's value in a single audience.
The coin was released under the Reiwa era, Emperor Naruhito's first major commemorative postal issue.
