Obverse description At center, the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal of Japan (十六弁八重表菊) is depicted in high relief against a dark mirror field, rendered as a sixteen-petaled double chrysanthemum. The denomination appears in both Latin script '1000Y' to the right and Japanese characters '千円' to the left, flanking the central emblem. Below, the legend 'MINAMI-TORI-SHIMA' is inscribed in Latin capitals, with the corresponding Japanese characters '南鳥島' displayed prominently beneath. The engraver's initials 'ВБ' (Vitaly Bakhtinov) appear in the lower field. The overall design is executed in proof finish with sharp detail on the beveled hexagonal flan.

Additional information

Minami-Tori-Shima — Japan's easternmost point, a coral atoll roughly 1,900 kilometers from the mainland — became strategically critical after surveys confirmed substantial rare-earth mineral deposits in the surrounding seabed sediments, published in a 2013 Nature paper. Japan's commemorative coin program has increasingly focused on remote territorial islands partly as an assertion of administrative jurisdiction, particularly as maritime boundary disputes with neighboring states intensified through the 2010s. This issue belongs to that broader series.
