Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Japan's admission to the United Nations, which was finally secured in December 1956 after Soviet vetoes had blocked membership for years. Japan's accession came as part of a package deal in which sixteen nations were admitted simultaneously — a Cold War compromise that broke a years-long deadlock in the Security Council.
