Issued to mark the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — still four years away at the time of striking — this was among the earliest official numismatic releases in Japan's prolonged commemorative program leading up to the Games. The series ultimately ran across multiple years and denominations, making individual issues easy to overlook, though the 2016 pieces represent the opening salvo of what became one of the most extensive Olympic coin programs the Japan Mint has undertaken.
