Part of Japan's ongoing commemorative program tied to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, this issue was released two years ahead of the Games as part of a multi-coin series that ultimately ran to dozens of individual sport-specific pieces. Judo holds particular weight in the series — Japan's most decorated Olympic discipline and the sport Jigoro Kano systematized in Tokyo in the 1880s before it entered the Olympic program at the 1964 Tokyo Games, the last time Japan hosted.
The .999 fine specification places it among the purer issues in Japan Mint's commemorative output, a step above the .925 silver used in earlier Olympic series coinage.
