Part of Japan's 47 Prefectures Coin Program, launched in 2008 to issue commemorative silver pieces for each of Japan's administrative regions, the Gifu installment honors a landlocked prefecture perhaps best known internationally for the historic post towns of Magome and Tsumago along the old Nakasendō highway. The program was administered through a lottery system — demand so consistently outstripped supply that the Mint bureau was forced to allocate coins by random draw rather than direct sale.
