Part of Japan Mint's 47 Prefectures Coin Program, which ran from 2008 to 2016 and produced a distinct silver issue for each of Japan's prefectures. Chiba Prefecture's selection reflects its geographic identity as the peninsula enclosing Tokyo Bay to the east — home to Narita International Airport and a coastline that made it historically significant as a maritime and commercial gateway long before the airport era.
The program was limited to 100,000 pieces per prefectural issue.
