| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field features a vivid color-printed ukiyo-e style scene depicting a steam locomotive at a Meiji-era railway station, surrounded by a crowd of figures dressed in both traditional Japanese and Western attire, evoking the modernization spirit of the Meiji period. The legend 日本国 (Japan) arcs across the upper field, while 千円 (1000 Yen) appears at the lower right in raised characters. At the upper left, a square cartouche bears the MEIJI150th campaign logo alongside the kanji 明治150年, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. The colorized illustration is rendered in a style reminiscent of Hiroshige-school woodblock prints, lending the design a distinctly historical artistic character. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design features the entwined dragon motif adapted from the obverse of the 20 Yen gold coin issued during the early Meiji period, rendered in fine relief. The dragon is encircled by inscriptions commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Meiji era. The legend 明治150年 appears prominently, accompanied by the denomination 1000円 and the date 平成30年 (Year 30 of Heisei, corresponding to 2018), separated by decorative bullet points. The overall design draws a deliberate artistic and historical connection between the numismatic heritage of the Meiji period and the commemorative issue. |

Issued in 2018 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration of 1868, this coin commemorates one of the most compressed periods of state-directed transformation in modern history — within roughly a generation, Japan dismantled the feudal han system, abolished the samurai class, and built a Western-style military, currency, and legal framework largely from scratch. The Meiji government's 1871 New Currency Act, which established the yen itself, was a direct product of that upheaval.
