Obverse description Four Chinese seal-script ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square hole, reading clockwise. The inscription Da Quan Dang Qian, meaning 'Large coin worth one thousand,' is cast in raised relief with bold, well-defined strokes. The characters occupy the four quadrants of the field, with each ideogram flanked by the rim and the square perforation. The coin exhibits the characteristic flat, unadorned field typical of Han and Three Kingdoms period cast bronze cash coinage.
