Beschrijving voorzijde The central design features the Korean national emblem — the taeguk symbol set within a stylized hibiscus flower (mugunghwa) — encircled by a curved ribbon bearing the Hangul legend 대한민국 (Republic of Korea). Flanking the emblem on either side are decorative sprays of hibiscus blossoms in high relief. The denomination '1.000 원 WON' appears in the lower central field, with the issuer legend '한국은행' (Bank of Korea) inscribed in large Hangul characters along the lower rim. The dual-calendar date '4303 – 1970' is positioned in the upper field, referencing both the Dangun era and the Gregorian year.

Beschrijving keerzijde The central field depicts four uniformed military busts in left-facing profile, representing soldiers of the United Nations coalition forces who served during the Korean War. Behind the figures, the South Korean Taegukgi and the United Nations flag are crossed, with the UN emblem prominently displayed on the latter. The inner border is adorned with a continuous band of small national flag emblems representing the member nations of the UN coalition. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF KOREA' arcs across the upper rim, while 'U.N. FORCES' is inscribed at the base of the inner circle. The dates '1950 · 1953' appear in the upper inner field, commemorating the duration of the Korean War.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, this piece commemorates the UN intervention that began in June 1950 — the first time the United Nations directly authorized collective military force against an aggressor state. South Korea was the only country on earth with a direct stake in that precedent, and the Bank of Korea's decision to produce a heavy .999 fine silver piece reflects the weight the ROK government placed on that distinction.

KM#13 is a low-mintage commemorative with limited distribution outside South Korea, making it genuinely scarce in Western collections.
