North Korean commemorative issues are rarely what they appear. This 1000 Won note was released to mark the centenary of Kim Il Sung's birth — April 15, 1912, which the DPRK calendar designates as "Day of the Sun" — though the print date of 2013 suggests it commemorates the first anniversary of that centenary observance rather than the event itself. These notes were not intended for ordinary commercial circulation; they function as political artifacts distributed through controlled channels, often to foreign visitors or in diplomatic gift packages.
The watermark is the sole security feature, modest by any standard, which tells you something about the expected handling environment.
