Obverse description The South Korean national arms at centre, comprising a stylised yin-yang symbol (taeguk) within a floral rosette, encircled by a ribboned scroll bearing the Hangul inscription 대한민국 (Republic of Korea), flanked by decorative sprays of roses to either side and a crossed wheat-branch motif below. The denomination 1.000 WON and the Hangul legend 한국은행 (Bank of Korea) appear in the lower field, with the dual-year date 4303 – 1970 inscribed along the upper rim, referencing both the Korean Dangi calendar year and the Gregorian year. Reverse description A detailed frontal view of Sungnyemun (Namdaemun, the Great South Gate) of Seoul, depicted in fine relief showing the two-tiered traditional Korean gatehouse pavilion surmounting a massive stone archway, flanked by trees and set within its surrounding stone wall platform. The curved tiled rooflines and bracketed eaves of the historic structure are rendered with considerable architectural precision. The arched legend REPUBLIC OF KOREA curves along the upper periphery, while the inscriptions SEOUL and GREAT SOUTH GATE are arranged in two lines across the lower field beneath the gate.
