Issued to mark the 2012 World Expo held in Yeosu, South Korea — officially themed around "The Living Ocean and Coast" — this coin was part of a broader commemorative program that included both circulating and collector pieces. The Yeosu Expo ran from May to August 2012 and drew over eight million visitors, making it one of the more heavily attended recognized international expositions of that decade. Trimetallic coins of this type were relatively novel for the Bank of Korea at the time of issue, the layered construction requiring more precise striking pressures than conventional bimetallic work.
