The 5th Republic designation refers to the government established after Chun Doo-hwan seized power following the December Twelfth Coup of 1979 and the subsequent suppression of the Gwangju Uprising in May 1980. This 1000 Won denomination was introduced as part of a coinage reform that coincided with the new administration's effort to project institutional normalcy — a civilian-coded currency for a government that had arrived through force.
KM#25 was struck only during the early 1980s before the series was retired.
