| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central vignette presents a portrait of Yi Hwang (1501–1570), the eminent Joseon Dynasty Confucian scholar known by his pen name Toegye, rendered in intaglio against a fine guilloche underprint. Inscriptions in Hangul appear above and to the right of the portrait, identifying the issuing authority and denomination. A single raised coloured tactile dot for the visually impaired is positioned at the lower left of the note. |

This issue entered circulation as South Korea's economy was accelerating through one of its steepest growth decades, though the 1,000 won note itself was hardly a prestige denomination — it was working currency, handled hard and retired fast. The Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation had taken over domestic production from foreign printers by this period, part of a broader push toward self-sufficient security printing infrastructure that began in the 1970s.
The watermark remains the sole listed security feature, which reflects the denomination's place in the hierarchy — higher values in the same era carried more elaborate protection.
