Mongolia's early 1990s commemorative gold program was launched almost immediately after the country shed Soviet-era single-party rule in 1990, with the Bank of Mongolia issuing a series of lunar-themed pieces partly to generate hard currency through Western numismatic markets. The Year of the Monkey falls within the first cycle of that program, making 1992 one of the earliest years the newly independent central bank operated with full autonomous authority over its coinage contracts.
These were struck to one-troy-ounce specifications, almost certainly by a European contract mint rather than domestically, as Mongolia had no facility capable of producing fine gold coinage at the time.
