Mongolia has issued wildlife-themed silver coins steadily since the early 2000s, largely through European minting contractors serving the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This particular issue was produced for the numismatic trade and never saw use as currency within Mongolia itself.
The Ural owl ranges across the boreal forests of Russia and Central Asia, with a small resident population in northern Mongolia near the Siberian border.
