The saker falcon holds singular importance in Mongolian culture — it has been central to the country's falconry tradition for over four millennia, and Mongolia remains one of the primary range states for wild saker populations, which have faced serious pressure from illegal trapping for the Gulf states' falconry markets. CITES listing disputes over the saker occupied international wildlife bodies for much of the 2010s, with Mongolia consistently pushing for stronger export controls.
