Part of a wave of small-format gold bullion and commemorative issues that Mongolian and other smaller central banks began producing aggressively in the mid-2000s for the collector market. Mongolia has no particular historical or geographic connection to Machu Picchu — this is a pure novelty issue, one of dozens of world-landmark themed coins the Bank of Mongolia licensed through European coin marketing intermediaries during this period.
