This large-format silver piece belongs to a wave of Mongolian commemorative issues produced through the 1990s, when the Bank of Mongolia aggressively entered the collector coin market following the country's transition from a Soviet-satellite command economy to an independent state after 1990. The program generated hard currency during a period of severe economic contraction — GDP fell by roughly a third between 1990 and 1993.
The "Ancient Runners" subject draws on Mongolia's deep tradition of Naadam festival competition, the three-sport event combining wrestling, horsemanship, and archery that has been documented since at least the thirteenth century.
