The Central Mosque of Astana — formally the Grand Mosque — was completed in 2023 after years of construction delays and stands as one of the largest mosques in Central Asia, with a capacity exceeding 30,000 worshippers. Its construction was a direct expression of Kazakhstan's post-Soviet religious rehabilitation policy, which has seen the state invest heavily in Islamic infrastructure since independence while simultaneously maintaining a constitutionally secular government — a tension that defines much of the country's cultural politics.
Kazakhstan has issued commemorative silver coins tied to major architectural projects with increasing frequency since the early 2010s, typically timed to coincide with official openings or anniversaries of state significance.
