Obverse description The obverse displays the coat of arms of Uganda at center, featuring a traditional Kiganda shield flanked by two crossed spears, supported by a kob (Uganda antelope) to the left and a grey crowned crane to the right, the national bird of Uganda, all resting on a grassy mound above a scroll. The date is split on either side of the central device, reading '19' to the left and '98' to the right. The legend 'BANK OF UGANDA' arcs along the upper periphery, while '1000 SHILLINGS' curves along the lower periphery, both separated from the field by a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse features a centrally placed rendition of a vintage Australian postage stamp, depicted in relief within a dotted rectangular frame. The stamp design reproduces the 7½d Australian stamp issued for the XVIth Olympiad held in Melbourne in 1956, showing an Olympic torch bearer in motion surrounded by the Southern Cross stars, surmounted by the five Olympic rings, with the inscriptions 'AUSTRALIA' above and 'XVIth OLYMPIAD MELBOURNE' within the stamp field. Surrounding the stamp in the outer legend, arcing along the upper border, is '· XXVI SUMMER GAMES · ATLANTA ·', while the lower arc reads '100 YEARS FROM GREECE TO', all within a reeded border.
