Obverse description The national coat of arms of Uganda occupies the central field, depicting a shield bearing the national colours flanked by a Uganda kob (antelope) on the left and a grey crowned crane on the right, both serving as supporters, with crossed spears behind the shield and a scroll below bearing the national motto. The legend BANK OF UGANDA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the denomination 1000 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower arc. The date 2002 is divided on either side of the shield in the middle field.

Reverse description At the centre of the reverse, a rectangular colour-printed inset depicts a red grouper fish with white spots swimming amid a vibrant coral reef scene rendered in vivid polychrome enamel, featuring corals and sea vegetation in blues, greens, purples, and yellows. The fish is shown in profile, facing left, within the recessed rectangular panel set into the polished coin field. Flanking the central panel on either side are two raised dot ornaments. The legend MARINE LIFE arcs along the upper periphery, and OF THE OCEANS is inscribed along the lower arc, both within the beaded border.

Additional information

Uganda's wildlife-themed collector issues of the early 2000s were produced under licensing arrangements common to small-economy mints at the time, with the actual striking typically contracted to private minting houses in Europe rather than produced domestically. The Bank of Uganda has no functioning coin production facility of its own.

Silver-plated bronze rather than sterling silver keeps this firmly in the lower tier of the commemorative market — a cost structure that allowed wide distribution through third-party dealers.
