Uganda's 1996 foreign-themed commemorative series was produced explicitly for the collector market, not domestic circulation — a practice the Bank of Uganda leaned into heavily during the 1990s as a revenue stream during a period of post-civil war fiscal reconstruction. The Matterhorn issue was struck by a private European mint and sold primarily through international coin dealers, meaning most examples never touched Ugandan soil.
