Uganda's 1996 shilling coinage was produced during a period of relative monetary stabilization under the Museveni government, following years of catastrophic inflation that had effectively destroyed the earlier shilling series. The Kreuzberge — the Ruwenzori range's German colonial name — sits on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a region that remained geopolitically tense throughout the 1990s.
