Somalia's elephant bullion series occupies an unusual niche: issued under a government with virtually no functional central authority during the mid-2000s, the coins were licensed through foreign minting arrangements rather than produced by any Somali state infrastructure. The series trades largely on bullion value and collector interest in the elephant motif, which changes annually — the 2006 design being one of the earlier iterations in what became a modestly followed annual run.
