This is one of a series of Ugandan novelty issues from the late 1990s in which foreign coins — here an actual circulating Dutch 5 euro cent planchet or struck piece — were physically bonded to a host coin, creating a hybrid collectible marketed squarely at the thematic souvenir trade. The series anticipated Dutch euro adoption, which formally occurred in 2002. Bank of Uganda's willingness to lend its sovereign authority to such pieces reflects how aggressively some smaller issuing bodies courted the international coin collector market during this period.
